American Born Chinese (2013) is a light installation that includes over twelve hundred fortune cookies, illuminated from below by a light box revealing a colorful American flag. The intention of the work is to challenge an imaginary cultural icon (i.e. Fortune cookies ) which were created in America. This false Chinese icon has become part of a fabricated identity for those of Chinese descent in America. How much of this imaginary authenticity can I accept into my cultural identity while trying to adapt to American culture?
